Linux is the Unix like operating system I choose to use whenever possible. I first started using Linux about seven years ago. At that time installation was problematic, especially if you wanted to create a dual boot system so you could continue to use Microsoft's Windows and have the option of using Linux as well. This has all changed with distributions like Redhat, Mandrake and the Debian distribution. Installation is now much easier and it is possible for a relatively new computer entheusiast to quickly feel comfortable with Linux. Linux has matured a lot in the past six years and today is becoming the OS of choice for many businesses. There are many reasons for using Linux. Most Linux afficianado's would tell you about the power of this operating system. Many would point out it's speed and stability. Very few would fail to mention it's cost, Linux is available for free! Along with the Linux operating system most distributions include hundreds of software applications that are also free. These include the Gimp, the gcc compiler, many, many utility programs including all you would ever need to connect to the Internet and build a web page as well as editors, scripting engines, games, and at least one version of almost any software application you might name as well as many you have never even thought of.
Linux Tips, Tricks and Notes Linux is powerful. No doubt about it. It has the ability to perform many tasks that are difficult if not impossible using the MS windows system and without spending lots of money on even more expensive MS authorized and licensed software. Want to go through all of the text files on your PC and replace the words "Microsoft Windows" with the word "Linux"? No problem, just learn a little about "sed" the "stream editor" included in all Linux distributions and you can do it. I'll be loading some pages I've developed that discuss this and other short cut utilities I've learned a little about soon. If you want to learn more right now, try the Linux Organization website to find out more.
