His first professional work was a N. A. S. A. feasibility study of laser communication
between the earth and a deep-space probe near Mars, at a distance of 100 million
miles.
N. A. S. A. awarded Dr. Kerr a prize for his design of a telescope adapted to receive
optical communication from space probes near the outer planets (Mars, Saturn) or from
beyond the solar system, as far as 1000 astronomical units away. The telescope, 10
meters in diameter, will be one of the largest in the world.
At present there is a N. A. S. A. space probe orbiting Mars with various
scientific instruments, including a laser altimeter similar to one designed and
recommended by Dr. Kerr. The instruments will collect data in support of missions
seeking evidence of extraterrestrial life.
